Exhibition Overview

Masterpieces of Modern Korean Painting

Masterpieces of Modern Korean Painting ambitiously features one hundred color ink and oil paintings produced by fifty seven Korean painters whose contribution to the history of Korean art is seminal and substantial in order to shed light on the quiet essential nucleus of Korean painting. These works of art clearly embody the painters' fierce creative aspiration and ardor while illuminating their bold experimentalism and mature artistic zenith. Also, they shared emotions together with viewers in the raging waves of the twentieth-century history of Korea and are still captivating us with its affective eloquence today.
It is safely hoped that this exhibition will allow us to command an unbroken view of the half a century-long history of modern and contemporary Korean painting through its selected paintings made from the 1920s to the 1970s. The selection consists of one hundred works representative of modern Korean art: thirty color ink paintings and seventy oil paintings by fifty seven artists whose contributions to Korean modern and contemporary art scene are indispensible and irrefutable.
Many people are now oblivious about the hardships and passions of artists of the time, but the achieved outcomes of Korean artists worked during the modern and contemporary periods are of great importance and influence.
