Kim Heecheon (b. 1989), who studied architecture, produces unique videos in which he combines real and virtual images with digital technology. Manifesting the true spirit of digital media, Kim’s works adopt new perceptions of time and space to examine contemporary themes.
Sleigh Ride Chill is based on a real experience from Kim Heecheon (b. 1989)’s life. After losing his smartphone and laptop, Kim was gripped with anxiety, knowing that so much of his personal information had been potentially exposed.
In the past, most people had no real outlet for sharing their thoughts, but today, the internet and social media allow us to broadcast our opinions on any conceivable topic. When we share these thoughts, they attract responses from others who agree with us, leading to the instantaneous formation of virtual groups and spaces. In addition to our ideas, people’s private photos and videos are often leaked online, where they can be tagged with “clickbait” headlines and viewed by untold numbers of others. For the unfortunate victims of these incidents, there is little to do but wait and hope that people will eventually forget about the images and move on. But the harsh truth is that nothing that appears on the internet is ever be totally erased or forgotten. Sleigh Ride Chill deals with such virtual online spaces where images can be recycled in perpetuity.
