Exhibition Overview

交, 향 Graphic Symphonia

In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Korea and Japan, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) in Korea is delighted to present the exhibition, Graphic Symphonia.
The exhibition celebrates the graphic design trends of Korea and Japan over the past 50 years and introduces leading graphic designers from both countries who have strived to cultivate intimate partnership for the pursuit of shared visual culture in the contemporary era.

Graphic design is intricately intertwined in our daily lives and culture, acting as both reflection and catalyst of change. The images of graphic design are symbols of an era and a generation, and designers are the ones who bring these images to life. This exhibition will present creative works from the first-generation graphic designers to young aspiring designers, thus displaying the mutual influence and contrasts among the lifestyles and cultures of Korea and Japan. Graphic Symphonia is an interactive exhibition coupled with a variety of programs that seek to engage visitors and extend the theme of “resonating with one another” far beyond the featured artists and their works. The Korea-Japan Design Symposium runs in conjunction with the exhibition as a prime opportunity for designers from both countries and participants to interact and share ideas. Other programs include design seminars that explore the future and other facets of design, creative workshops and studio programs for emerging designers as well.

In respect to the exhibition and the variant extended programs, the graphic design trends of Korea and Japan will serve as a medium in which to explore the past and the present of Korea and Japan, and an opportunity to foster strong bond between the creative communities of both countries in pursuit of brighter future for the visual arts in East Asia.
