Toy Prototype is part of a developing series of a robotic allegory that began with the artist’s first robotic sculpture Homemade RC Toy, which was created for the solo exhibition at Kunsthalle Basel in 2019. Evolving at every stage, Jeong Geumhyung's "toys" are DIY robots created by the artist herself, an amateur who has started to learn mechatronics one step at a time.
Although the artist stumbles into problem after problem on the journey of making robots, simple solutions also emerge yet again, leading to further problems. The process of searching for solutions to these problems that constantly crop up is an endless act of self-learning and homework. Jeong's robots created by tightening - every single bolt herself, as if sewing every stitch by hand reveal a somewhat - unstable state. These fragile and clumsy robots make the observer nervous, and
yet this is what makes the robots appear all the more human. These weaknesses propel the owner to pamper them, a trait that qualifies them as toys.
In moments when a mechanical apparatus appears to be in need of human help, what emotions do we as humans feel? On the one hand, we expect machines to provide us more convenience; on the other hand, we take care of them with our heart to maintain their performance and extend their lifespan. Some people are ready to invest and serve certain machines purely for the sake of one's own pleasure. For this exhibition, the robotic sculptures will be presented alongside videos that capture the relationship between robot-maker Jeong Geumhyung and her robots.
