Jung Youngsun: For All That Breathes On Earth explores half a century of practice by Jung Youngsun (b. 1941), Korea’s first licensed female landscape architect, who has worked on major public and private projects to date; Olympic Village Apartments (1988), Daejeon Expo '93 (1993,1999), Yeouiudo Saetgang Ecological Park (1997,2008), Heewon (1997), and Seonyudo Park (2002), among many others. The exhibition seeks to shed light on how Jung has been paving the way for designing the environments for more-than-human habitats in the cities and our land at large. Highlighting the artistic and scientific caliber of landscape designer, the exhibition showcases her landscape design as a means of responding to the ecological order inherent to the nature, while creating the art of social and scientific complexities. Alongside more than eighty representative works and their archival materials such as sketches, drawings and models, the exhibition will present newly commissioned gardens where the audience can experience the art of Jung’s landscape first-hand.

#1. Introduction Welcome! The exhibition you are about to see, entitled Jung Youngsun: For All That Breathes on Earth, encompasses the life and work of Jung Youngsun, one of Korea’s first generation of landscape architects. For Jung Youngsun, landscape is a comprehensive science and art form where her materials are all things that breathe, from microorganisms to the universe itself. In a landscaping career spanning half a century, she has carefully listened to the stories that Korea’s land has to share, endeavoring to preserve the biodiversity of its indigenous species. Even in her activities with prominent construction rojects in the era of national development, including the building of expressways and industrial parks and the staging of Olympic and Expo events, she has strived to incorporate the beauty of Korean landscapes and draw renewed attention to them. This exhibition adopts a thematic approach as it presents some of the most prominent landscape projects in which Jung has participated to date—dating back to her first involvement with landscape projects as in the 1970s—alongside around 500 archival materials. We hope that this experience with the work of Korea’s leading landscape architect and her guiding philosophy will also provide an encounter with the history of Korean landscape and the fascinating stories associated with its developments.
