Introduction

카야 클라라 주(1991년생)는 물리적, 서사적 경계를 탐구하는 확장적이고 학제적인 작업을 하는 오스트리아-한국계 작가다. 현재 오스트리아 빈에서 거주하며 작업하고 있으며 문화적, 사회적 행동 양상과 우리를 둘러싼 자원과 환경에 대한 인간의 개입이 작업의 주관심사다. 특정 장소와 공간에 초점을 맞춘 작업을 자주 하며, 세밀하게 연출된 조각은 허구로 가득한 긴장된 공간으로 관객을 이끈다. 2024년 빈 응용예술대학교 사진과를 졸업했으며, 같은 해 오스트리아 문화부의 신진작가 국가장학금과 이응노의 집 창작스튜디오에 선정되었다. 소더비 오스트리아(빈, 2021), MQ 아트박스(빈, 2021), 스파크 아트 페어(빈, 2021), 빌드라움 07(빈, 2022), 페리스코프 잘츠부르크(잘츠부르크, 2022), 갤러리 스몰카 컨템포러리(빈, 2023)에서 개인전을 개최했다. 스왑 아트 페어 바르셀로나(바르셀로나, 2022), 수수디오 아트스페이스(빈, 2023) 등에서 대화형 전시에 참여했다.

In the expansive, transdisciplinary works by the austrian- korean artist Kaja Clara Joo (b. 1991) physical as well as narrative boundaries are explored. Cultural and social patterns of behaviour and human intervention in the resources and environment around us are a central concern of her artistic practice. Joo often works site- and space- specifically. Meticulously staged sculptures invite viewers to delve into tense spaces loaded with fiction. She graduated with honors in Photography at the University of Applied Arts Vienna in 2024 and was awarded the state scholarship for emerging artists by the Ministry of Culture in Austria and Artist Residency in the House of Lee Ungno in Korea the same year.
Her solo presentations have taken place at Sotheby's Austria (2021), the MQ Artbox (2021), SPARK Art Fair (2021), Bildraum 07 (2022), Periscope Salzburg (2022), Gallery Monitor in Czech Republic (2023), Gallery Smolka Contemporary (2023). Dialogue exhibitions include the SWAB Art Fair Barcelona (2022) or Sussudio Artspace (2023). She currently lives and works in Vienna, Austria.
