MMCA Talk: Dieter Daniels “Video Installation & Live Television: the variable media concept in the work of Paik Nam June”
Title Video Installation & Live Television: the variable media concept in the work of Paik Nam June
Date and time 26 July 2023 (Wed), 15:00~17:00
Venue Seminar Room 2, 3rd Floor, Education Center, MMCA Seoul
Speaker Dieter Daniels (Professor of Art History and Media Theory, University of the Arts Leipzig, Germany)
Content This lecture discusses two examples for the relation of Live Television and Video Installation in the work of Paik Nam June. Firstly Global Groove(1973) and TV Garden(1974), secondly Wrap Around the World(1988) and The More, The Better(1988). Paik's video installations have never been a fixed and frozen entity. They include a certain degree of variability: adaptations to the exhibition space, updates in technology, and conceptual revisions. For these kinds of artworks, museum collections have to develop new strategies of permanence through maintenance and re-interpretations. The concept of “variable media” is one way to cope with these demands.
* This lecture is a public program following MMCA Studies 14: Data Society and Art (2022) to continue the further discussion on art based on data. Following the lecture, we will discuss the contextualization of Paik Nam June’s The More,The Better in global art history and its challenges as a museum collection.
