The Window of Spaceship 'In-Between'

chelfitsch / Toshiki Okada

Theater

Japanese with subtitles in Korean, English

The spaceship In-Between is cruising through the universe with a crew of four humans and one android. Their conversation, which initially began over "space music," continues and touches on complex, existential issues as well as trivial and mundane matters of life. The work features four non-native Japanese speaking actors who learned Japanese while living in Japan. Because of this multilingual background, the language spoken in the play begins to take on multiple meanings and functions, which are presented parallel to the situation on board like a multiverse. In-Between suddenly becomes more than just the name of the spaceship or the tunnel between two galaxies, but a name for the multiplicity of different realities, an entity caught in-between that cannot be defined in single terms.

○ Venue: MMCA Seoul B1, MMCA Multi-Project Hall

○ Date: May 25, 2024. 13:00, 17:30 (100 min.)

Toshiki Okada is a Japanese playwright, theater director, and novelist who founded the theater company chelfitsch in 1997. The name "chelfitsch" is a playful rendering of the word "selfish" in a childish pronunciation, alluding to the characteristics and the starting point of Okada's work. His artwork consists of childlike, clumsy, and exaggerated speech and bodily gestures, as well as explorations into microcosmic and self-centered worlds. Okada deliberately exaggerates colloquial language, curse words, pauses between words, and meaningless body movements that are consciously removed from conventional theater stages. Recently, he has been questioning the relationship between the individual and society, and how theater and representation can address the complexities of reality. His play Five Days in March won the prestigious 49th Kishida Kunio Drama Award, his collection of short stories The End of the Special Time We Were Allowed was awarded the Oe Kenzaburo Prize, and his Thai artists-collaboration piece Pratthana - A Portrait of Possession won the 27th Yomiuri Theater Awards Selection Committee Special Prize.

The Window of Spaceship 'In-Between', which was originally scheduled for both days from May 25 to 26, will be performed twice on May 25 (13:00, 17:30)  due to internal circumstances at the MMCA Seoul.
