MMCA Cheongju Special Storage will be temporarily suspended for internal inspection from Tuesday, February 26 to Friday, February 27.
MMCA Cheongju Special Storage is an open storage specially created to promote research on collections and provide intensive appreciation of works. Starting in 2020, the Special Storage has been introducing drawing works owned by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. Participating works include LEE Jungseop’s A Boy (1943-1945), PARK Sookeun's Landscape (1956), YOO Youngkuk’s Mountain (Mid-1970s), WON Sukyun’s Ants (1976) , SUH Yongsun’s Pine Tree (1983). They represent MMCA’s collection, demonstrating a sense of form and artistic experiments at work. Special Storage’s Drawings from MMCA Collection provides the opportunity to explore the shifts in the concept of drawings from various perspectives through an extensive collection of drawings.
The MMCA Special Storage, newly opened to the public, presents contemporary Japanese prints as part of its notable foreign collection, displayed alongside drawings by Korean artists. Printmaking expands the realm of art through countless transformations and experiments that occur between the materiality of the plate and the support. Since being recognized as a creative practice beyond mere reproduction, Japanese printmaking entered an experimental and dynamic heyday in the 1970s, influenced by Pop Art, Conceptual Art, and the rise of popular culture. Prints produced in the 1980s and beyond reflect the development of diverse techniques and the ongoing expansion of printmaking into broader contemporary artistic approaches. A range of works from this period, preserved in the collection of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Cheongju, showcases refined expression and innovative experimentation.
