- Metaverse-based virtual exhibition: July 27 – September 25, 2022

- Release on MMCA YouTube Channel(Youtube.com/mmcakorea)

- Organized by MMCA, Korea and Jatiwagi Art Factory

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art(MMCA), Korea and Jatiwagi Art Factory jointly present an online forum titled Terracotta Friendship as a part of the “2022 Asia Project”, MMCA’s long-term research project, and of Jatiwagi Art Factory’s “Terracotta Embassy” program.

They embarked on the new project asking what derives our imagination for making a better life and society and presupposed that what empowers sustainable solidarity and community is the word of “friendship.” The project focuses on “friendship,” which may sound like no big deal, evoking thoughts on the common theme of “What is friendship?” In Seoul, Kang Seung Lee, Dew Kim, Yuri An and WORKS(LEE Yeonjeong, Lee Harim) participate as presenters to talk about their perspective of “friendship.” Here, the target audience of “friendship” encompasses all the objects that have been otherized outside the subject of oneself beyond people-to-people relationships. Kang Seung Lee considers the Multigenerational/Intergenerational Responsibility and Care in the queer community symbolized as the cactus of Harvey Milk as a part of “friendship” to serve as the basis for solidarity and community in this forum and through his installation work at the metaverse exhibition, striving to conjure up a new horizon in the future. Meanwhile, Dew Kim builds an alternative temple called Metatemple to decorate an extended shelter where people marginalized based on the dichotomous standard can get together. Yuri An approaches the concept of “friendship” in linguistic point of view, posing questions on how we can live together in this world beyond the limits of identity given and worn regardless of individual choice, such as nation, ethnicity, and race. Lastly, WORKS(LEE Yeonjeong, LEE Harim) - a designer duo - presents a manual titled Working Together: How to be a BFF by trying to think about their stories of coworking for long and their time spent with those around them. The four-themed meta-pavilions are located on the “Terracotta City” reflecting the futuristic imagination of Jatiwagi Art Factory in the metaverse exhibition, connecting, and expanding with the concepts of social, economic, and political friendship proposed by Jatiwagi Art Factory.

The metaverse exhibition of Terracotta Friendship is available without any limitation of space or time until September 25 when the documenta 15 ends. The audience will be able to flexibly travel across Terracotta City formed through the imagination of the artists as well as actual cities like Seoul and Kassel.
