Collection Highlights: Synchronic Moments explores the artistic language articulated through the multichannel form by contemporary new media artists in Korea, centering on the new media collection at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea. The term ‘synchronic’, meaning ‘sharing the same time’, provides the conceptual basis of this exhibition, examining how the various elements of new media, such as video, moving image, sound and time, are highlighted through the most exquisite and refined intersection and juxtaposition. What are the meanings that lie in the countlessly emerging and interlocking scenes, and what must we find in such synchronic moments?
The exhibition presents some of the key illustrative works of the new media art trends in Korea today, including works by Kim Heecheon, Nam Hwayeon, Park Chankyong, An Jungju, Oh Min and Jun Sojung. They are also the latest addition to the 189 works in the new media collection at MMCA, either screened for the first time or hitherto rarely exhibited. The six diverse works that unfold in the amphitheater-like exhibition space demonstrate the profound insight and sharpness of the Korean contemporary artists who experiment with this age, subject and the media environment through their own distinctive perception and reason.
