The Fourth Industrial Revolution has arrived, binding our lives ever more tightly to cutting-edge technologies like big data, blockchains and artificial intelligence. Data is the most familiar form of digital information to us, and the fundamental building block for new technologies; ways of processing it are becoming remarkably more diverse. Entire societies, from the everyday lives of individuals to the systems of the state, are being converted into data. Our socioeconomic paradigm, too, is changing as data evolves.


Who processes, owns and distributes data, and how do they use it to gain power? How do blind faith, groundless distrust and the sense of crisis surrounding data affect our lives? Can data really be used for the public good? Vertiginous Data introduces the works of artists who take these questions as a starting point for exploring digital technology and discovering its aesthetic qualities. The participating artists classify and systematise data, expanding the scope of their artistic expression, while searching for ways of using cutting-edge technology to expand creative public property. Challenging the monopolisation data collection by an elite minority, they attempt to decentralise it in search of new, antiauthoritarian systems.


Featuring experimental works by some of today’s most prominent contemporary artists, Vertiginous Data reveals the unpredictable gaps that emerge in the digital systems that humans build, and in the environments that surround them.
