MMCA Deoksugung focuses on modern period starting from enlightenment movement in late 19th century, passing through Japanese occupation, the Pacific War and national Liberation in 1945. Following the traces of the historical figures who resisted against Japanese suppression, and fought for 'justice' during the turbulent time, the exhibition narrates the dynamic social and cultural changes and related art scene at the time. It delineates the genealogy of artist's thinking how Korean traditional spirit developed and fused with new idea of western influence.
