MMCA Residency Changdong run by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA) supports various art forms including music and dance as well as visual arts. It serves as a platform for international exchanges through various programs including the Mondrian Fund Fellowship Program, International Artist Fellowship Program (Middle East/Latin America), and International Artist/Researcher Residency Programs. MMCA Residency Changdong Report 2019 introduces ten artists from five countries who participated in the 17th International Residency Programs and showcases what they developed during the programs.
Their work started from what has always been there but is easily ignored because it is so routine and close to our everyday, such as the view from the studio window or the linear flow of time. This familiarity encompasses our own attitudes, which may have become numb to universal issues such as social isolation, conflicts, technology versus nature, and climate change. Instead of simply taking a critical attitude, the artists suggest ways to actively respond to these issues or look at them with fresh eyes. Their narrations, shared in the limited period of ten days, may be like the flash that disappears after a sudden burst of light. However, it may also be like the green flash that appears just above the sun before it rises. Like this flash of light, which is always there but cannot always be seen when overshadowed by poor surroundings, the artists are simply making their own light on the spot. It is yet unknown if their voices will eventually become the precursor to something enormous and bring a great light.
