Young Korean Artists 2021  is the 20th exhibition of the MMCA's Young Korean Artists program, which first began in 1981and now, as it celebrates its 40th anniversary, has become Korea's most time-honored and authoritative program dedicated to discovering young and emerging artists. The program has introduced emerging artists at the forefront of contemporary art and forecast the future of Korean art over its 40 years of activity. Approximately 400 emerging artists have been introduced over 20 Young Korean Artists exhibitions, and earned public recognition and evolve into artists representative of Korea.

Honoring the spirit of the Young Korean Artists program, which has sought to discover a wide spectrum of young contemporary artists for the past 40 years, this year's selection pool extended its focus on diversification of region (including international artists) and media. The 15 selected artists, all in their 30s, work with multifarious media ranging from painting, sculpture, installation, media to performance, photography, film, and ceramics. While looking beyond the properties of individual artistic media, they produce works that demonstrate and explore the junction between society and individuals or art.
The artists' perspectives on society present themselves in different forms, each reflecting the particularity of their unique situations. The 140-some new works premiering in this exhibition diversely and heterogeneously reveal a common identity shared by the artists as contemporary young adults who have collectively experienced the extraordinary circumstances of the current pandemic.
