Conservation science refers to the treatment of artworks that prevents additional deterioration and preserves them more effectively.
For scientific treatment and verification, such as material analysis, the process requires knowledge in chemistry in addition to art history.
Today, conservation of modern and contemporary artworks call for innovative approaches, demanding new purposes and meanings for art conservation and restoration.

X-Ray fluorescence analysis

X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) is the most widely used technique for analyzing sculptures, paintings and other works. This non-destructive analysis method does not require sampling and can be performed quickly.
For example, XRF analysis on Oh Ji-ho, allows us to know what ingredients are used. As shown below, ‘Silver White’ product has different properties, which means each company uses different pigments for making its own paints.
