Conservation
Conservation science refers to the treatment of artworks that prevents additional deterioration and preserves them more effectively.
For scientific treatment and verification, such as material analysis, the process requires knowledge in chemistry in addition to art history.
Today, conservation of modern and contemporary artworks call for innovative approaches, demanding new purposes and meanings for art conservation and restoration.
Jean Dubuffet, Chien de Guet II (Guard Dog) (1969-1970)
Chien de Guet II (1970) was created with paint over epoxy resin. The artwork was severely contaminated by dust and stains, and the paint layers were cracked and peeled off.
While its overall shape was stable, the contaminated surface deprived the work of genuine colors and required cleaning. After conducting a series of tests, appropriate cleaning agents and methods were determined.
The entire surface was cleaned, and the damaged paint layers were stabilized through the consolidation of paint layers.
