Conservation
Conservation science refers to the treatment of artworks that prevents additional deterioration and preserves them more effectively.
For scientific treatment and verification, such as material analysis, the process requires knowledge in chemistry in addition to art history.
Today, conservation of modern and contemporary artworks call for innovative approaches, demanding new purposes and meanings for art conservation and restoration.
Yook Myeong-shim Writers Series – Suh Chong-ju (Photographed in 1973│Treated in 2007)
The photographic portrait of Suh Chong-ju taken in the 1970s is a part of the Writers Series by Yook Myeong-shim. It had many black spots due to
problems on the negative and damages and stains on the photo's surface. After cleaning and removing the stains, the photo was restored by spotting and etching.
To extend the longevity of the gelatin silver print, the conservation team applied neutral matting, reinforced the corners, and applied selenium toning.
