Ron Mueck, Master of Contemporary Sculpture
11 APR 2025 — 13 JUL 2025
Ron Mueck’s first major retrospective in Asia is currently being presented at MMCA Seoul in collaboration with the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain. The exhibition includes the monumental installation Mass (2016–2017), alongside iconic solitary and coupled figures from earlier in the artist’s career, such as Young Couple (2013) and Woman With Shopping (2013), as well as more recent works that explore new ground, drawing on aspects of his earlier sculptures to find new ways to engage with the viewer. Ron Mueck has renewed modern figurative sculpture in profound ways through a body of work that touches upon the universal. At once mysterious and extremely lifelike, his works imbue reality with an intensity that invites us to confront our relationship to the body, to time, and to existence. His total oeuvre consists of just 48 works, which combine extreme technical skills with sophisticated artistic expression. This landmark exhibition not only showcases Mueck’s exploration of sculpture as a medium and his efforts to transcend its genre-specific limitations, but also presents an overview of his artistic journey.

14 APR 2025 — 6 JUL 2025
Surrealism and Korean Modern Arts is the second exhibition in the series “Rediscovery of Korean Modern Artists,” which was initiated in 2019 with the aim of restoring the richness of art history by uncovering and shedding new light on artists. The show presents six unknown artists who have displayed “surrealistic qualities rarely seen in the Korean art scene.” Before fully introducing the six artists, the exhibition begins by examining how Surrealism was understood and received in the Korean art scene during the period from the initial introduction of the term in the late 1920s to the early 1930s.

AHN Dongsook | Affection of Immemorial Antiquity I | 1969
Affection of Immemorial Antiquity I is a collage composed of thin, tightly woven matting—dyed rushes that have been precisely cut and arranged. The work generates a distinctive texture and a restrained visual aesthetic, producing a quiet rhythm through the careful placement of color and form. Presented at the 10th São Paulo Art Biennial in 1969, the piece received critical acclaim both in Korea and abroad.
