Chapter 1 General Provisions
Article 1 (Purpose)
The purpose of these regulations is to set out general requirements for effective operations of MMCA Residency Changdong·MMCA Residency Goyang (hereinafter collectively referred to as the “Residency”) operated by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (hereinafter referred to as the “MMCA”) in pursuit of artist residency program facilitation.
Article 2 (Duration of residence)
The duration of residence of artist-in-residence and project team-in-residence shall be as follows:
- Mid & long-term residence: 1 year
- Short-term residence: not exceeding 1 year
- Project team: 6 months
Article 3 (Operating hours)
The Residency shall remain operative as follows:
- Private studio: Private studio will be operative 24 hours a day; provided however that, opening hours may be shortened under unavoidable circumstances.
- Gallery: Galleries will be operative pursuant to government’s working days and working hours; provided however that opening hours may be extendable whenever deemed necessary.
Article 4 (Residency program)
The Residency shall offer:
- Private studios and other service facilities for artists and other creative professionals
- Artist roundtables and seminars
- Open studio events
- Exhibition opportunities and gallery operations
- Publications including exhibition catalogues
- Building and operation of an artist network at national·international level
- International MMCA Residency exchange programs
- Other programs as necessary for a better Residency operation
Article 5 (Attendance at residency)

① The selected artist-in-residence (including project team-in-residence unless otherwise specifically exempted by other regulations) shall be required attend at their studio work at least 10 days a month. An absence of artist-in-residence due to participation either in overseas exhibitions or creative activities will be permitted upon prior approval of the MMCA.

② The MMCA shall assess an actual attendance of artist-in-residence at the studio each month and may issue a warning notice against artist-in-residence with poor attendance.
Article 6 (Safety measures)

① The MMCA shall carry out a monthly safety inspection and artist-in-residence shall be required to cooperate with MMCA inspectors.

② Artist-in-residence shall undertake necessary safety and security measures to prevent fire – particularly, associated with electric appliances – and theft.
Chapter 2 Open Call for and Selection of the Artist-in-Residence
Article 7 (Open call)
The Director of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (hereinafter referred to as the “MMCA Director”) shall post an open call on the internet website or other media as appropriate at least 20 days from the date notice.
Article 8 (Applicant eligibility)
The Residency program applicant shall meet the eligibility requirements as follows:
- Korean or foreign artist aged 25 or older as of the date of application submission
- Creatively active Korean or foreign artist with no MMCA Residency experience
- For a project team residency program, two or more creatively active Korean or foreign artists
- Korean artist who does not own or use (operate) his or her own studio (or workspace)
Article 9 (Application)
The Residency program applicant shall, as required by the open call notice specified in Article 7, submit documents as follows:
- Application form
- CV/Resume
- Portfolio
- History of exhibitions in Korea and other countries
- Awards
- Written plan to work on during a residency
Article 10 (Organizing the Artist-in-Residence Selection Committee)

① The MMCA shall organize the Primary Artist-in-Residence Selection Committee (hereinafter referred to as the “Primary Selection Committee”) and the Final Artist-in-Residence Selection Committee (hereinafter referred to as the “Final Selection Committee”).

② The Primary Selection Committee shall be comprised of no more than five members selected from Residency manager and curators by the MMCA Director and shall be chaired by one member who is elected by majority vote among its members.

③ The Final Selection Committee shall be comprised of one chairperson and four members as specified below and shall be chaired by the MMCA Director:
- MMCA Director
- Leader of Exhibition 2 Team
- Three distinguished figures in an art society
Article 11 (Artist-in-Residence selection process)

① MMCA Residency selection process shall consist of primary stage and final stage.

② The primary selection shall be a documentary review and the final selection shall be a combination of documentary review and interview.

③ Specific selection criteria shall be established by respective Committee.

④ If a number of applicants is not sufficient or the Final Selection Committee finds no qualified applicant, the MMCA may upon its own discretion post another open call notice.
Chapter 3 Use of Residency Services
Article 12 (Residency moving-in process)
The selected artist-in-residence shall follow the Residency moving-in process set out by the MMCA Director. This process includes but not limited to a signing of MMCA Residency Accommodation Agreement.
Article 13 (Cost coverage)
The MMCA shall be responsible for costs and expenses incurred from Residency operations, including electricity, water and internet service while each artist-in-residence shall be responsible for any other costs and expenses incurred from personal usages.
Article 14 (Support for artist-in-residence)

① The MMCA Director may upon his or her own discretion limit any support package for artist-in-residence voluntarily dropped or forcibly expelled from the Residency due to a poor attendance of less than one-third of annual requirements or any reason defined in Article 18-2.

② The MMCA Director may upon his or her own discretion limit any support package for artist-in-residence with a poor private studio attendance.
Article 15 (Private studio disclosure)
The MMCA may disclose any private studio to Korean or foreign visitors for a purpose of Residency program promotion. In such event, artist-in-residence shall have no right to disagree to such disclosure.
Article 16 (Obligations of artist-in-residence)

① Artist-in-residence shall be actively involved in programs planned and operated by the Residency.

② Artist-in-residence shall refrain himself or herself from any act against sound social ethics or disruption of other artists’ creative activities.
Article 17 (Code of conduct)
Artist-in-residence shall strictly follow the Residency operational regulations and code of conduct.
Article 18 (Residency moving-out process)

① 1 Artist-in-residence shall move out from the accommodation until the moving-out day specified in the MMCA Residency Accommodation Agreement. Any voluntary early moving-out due to any unavoidable circumstance shall be notified to the MMCA Director.

② The MMCA Director may terminate the MMCA Residency Accommodation Agreement and issue an expel order of responsible artist-in-residence from the Residency accommodation if he or she fails to comply with its obligation set out in the Residency operational regulations or code of conduct
- Artist-in-residence fails to comply with its residence and program obligations
- Artist-in-residence is suspected or confirmed of any communicable disease, or in deteriorated health condition which does not justify continued participation of the Residency program
- Any event which can justify a termination of MMCA Residency Accommodation Agreement

③ Expel order under paragraph 2 above shall be executed at least 10 days later, provided however that any urgent requirement may justify immediate expel order execution
Article 19 (Exhibition venue)

① Artist-in-residence who wishes to use an exhibition venue (hereinafter referred to as the “Venue User”) shall obtain an approval from the MMCA Director.

② Venue User shall be solely and exclusively responsible for any loss or damage of his or her own works and belongings presented at the Venue, and also shall undertake safety and security measures including fire and theft insurance policy.
